Environmental Responsibility
We know our activities affect the environment we all share. We will work to reduce this impact. We are committed to understanding, monitoring, and controlling our environmental effects.
Making a positive contribution to our society is key to our work. We provide opportunities for local and regional artists to explore and develop their ideas. We also host various participatory activities for all ages to engage in the arts. We strive to ensure that the diverse, creative experiences we offer are enjoyed in a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. We also focus on inclusivity for everyone who visits or works with us.
What are some of the things we do?
Energy and Carbon
We utilise LED lighting in the second space. Sub-metering is in place across the building allowing for CAST to better understand where energy is used and to determine the best areas for energy efficiency projects. We have installed our first set of solar panels on our building.
Waste and Water
Working with our waste management partner Elgia. 100% of our waste is recycled or turned into energy.
Procurement
We source our food from local providers and offer a 50% meat free menu. We work with ReFood to sustainably recycle our food waste for energy. We have moved away from selling plastic disposable merchandise during pantomime season.
Theatre productions
We use the industry standard Theatre Green Book to guide us in our environmental responsibilities when producing theatre work.
Transport
We survey our audiences and staff about their travel choices and report as part of our Arts Council return.
Engagement
We have a quarterly Sustainability working group with Trustee engagement. Board engagement: Environment and sustainability is discussed at every board meeting.
Diversity
We report data annually on our staff, trustees and audiences. We are constantly working on our representation across the breadth of humanity. We have an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion group where we monitor progress in relation to staff and audiences.
Health, Safety and Wellbeing
We have mental health first aiders within our staff team and have recently performed a health and safety review, changing our practice.
What are we working on?
Energy and Carbon
- Measuring and disclosing our Scope 1 & 2 carbon footprint
- A switch off campaign with our staff.
- We are seeking funding for the next phase of our solar panel array.
Waste and Water
We continue to work with Elgia and encourage reusing and recycling across our team.
Procurement: We are developing a policy in this area, whilst continuing to source locally where possible.
Theatre Productions
We are improving our practice with regard to working sustainably within the theatre sector using the Theatre Green Book.
Transport
Encourage staff and audiences to make greener travel choices, through preshow emails and staff training.
Engagement
We are working through our 12-month action plan. Results from the Carbon Zero Group to be shared with all staff on a quarterly basis.
Diversity
We are working on an access membership to ensure everyone is welcome at Cast and all audiences are represented here. The EDI group are also working on trans inclusivity and actions we need to take.
Health, Safety and Wellbeing
We are retraining our Mental Health First Aiders and increasing the number of these across our staff team.
