News Story

Cast has been recognised in two categories at the 2027 Multicultural INSPIRE Awards, celebrating its contribution to charity and community, and its commitment to equality and diversity.

Cast is delighted to have been nominated for Outstanding Contribution to Charity & Community and Outstanding Contribution to Equality & Diversity at the 2027 Multicultural INSPIRE Awards.

The nominations recognise Cast’s ongoing commitment to bringing people together through culture, creating opportunities for participation and helping to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to feel welcome, represented and included.

As Doncaster’s flagship theatre and cultural organisation, Cast is a registered charity and Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. It engages almost 14,000 participants each year through more than 700 participation sessions, while working with more than 80 community and voluntary organisations.

Its community work includes Citizens of the World, developed with partners including Changing Lives, Migrant Action and Doncaster Conversation Club. The programme brings people from different cultural backgrounds together through creativity, helping to build relationships, confidence and a sense of belonging.

Cast also works to address barriers to cultural participation through accessible performances, sensory provision, bursaries and opportunities shaped by lived experience. Its Youth Theatre demonstrates this commitment in practice, with 44% of participants identifying as D/deaf, disabled, neurodivergent or having a long-term condition, while 35% receive bursary support.

In 2026, these values were reflected in Waiting in the Wings, a £50,778 National Lottery Heritage Fund project celebrating 250 years of theatre in Doncaster. Around 60 community performers came together to tell the city’s theatrical story, with two performances attracting 774 people. The project placed local voices at the heart of Doncaster’s cultural heritage, with BSL interpretation integrated into the performances.

Together, these examples reflect Cast’s belief that a theatre can be much more than a place to watch a performance. It can be a place to make connections, discover new opportunities, share stories and feel that you belong.

The nominations recognise the collective contribution of Cast’s staff, artists, participants, volunteers, partners, funders and communities, whose commitment makes this work possible.
