Cast and National Theatre Public Acts celebrate with communities taking part in The Doncastrian Chalk Circle

Last week Cast were joined by over sixty people to celebrate the creativity and achievements of Doncaster community groups who have been taking part in the National theatre’s Public Acts programme since October 2021. This event kicks off the next phase of preparation for the production of Doncastrian Chalk Circle which will be on at Cast from 27 – 29 August 2022.

The Doncastrian Chalk Circle is a heartrending and gripping tale of the families we choose, filled with passion, hope and plenty of Yorkshire grit and humour. Searing and celebratory, this new version of Brecht’s classic The Caucasian Chalk Circle, is adapted for this project by Chris Bush, with music by Ruth Chan.

Cast and the National Theatre have joined forces with the people of Doncaster for this epic community musical, featuring over 100 local performers, alongside a professional company and live band. This is a Public Acts production – part of the National Theatre’s nationwide initiative to create extraordinary acts of theatre and community.

We were delighted to welcome people from community groups (bfriend, Conversation Club, Edlington Community Organisation (ECO),Creative Directions, Young Company, Changing Lives, Peoples Group) from across Doncaster to celebrate our first term of workshops, following the rescheduling of the production twice, due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
