Ruth Chan is the Composer for The Doncastrian Chalk Circle

In the lead up to the incredible production of The Doncastrian Chalk Circle this August bank holiday, we wanted to highlight a few of the big names taking part, and share their views on what it means to be a part of the National Theatre's Public Acts programme. Find out more about The Doncastrian Chalk Circle and book your tickets here

RUTH CHAN

Ruth composes for stage, film, television and concert works. Recently she’s been working on: ‘The Hatchling’ (a dragon puppet for the official Queen’s Jubilee Pageant); ‘Play in a Day’ on Sky Arts with Chris Bush (writing a musical in a day!); and 'Beauty and the Seven Beasts' – where seven composers wrote an operatic aria for each sin – where (in her words) she lucked-out with the coolest sin: lust!

“It has been joyful to work on the National Theatre Public Acts scheme and I feel privileged to work with the Donny community. Being a non-northerner (midland imposter!), I really wanted the music to be exciting for the performers to learn and also feel ‘northern’ enough. I have loved every minute creating a community musical adaption to one of Brecht’s classic works!”
